About the artist
Li Ying (李英) is a contemporary Jian Zhan maker associated with the Jianyang ceramic tradition in Fujian. Published examples of her work show a particular focus on oil-drop tea bowls, including silver-toned spotting against dark glaze grounds. These cups connect her work with one of the most recognizable decorative traditions of Jian ware.
Her name appears in the city-level section of the Jian Zhan Arts and Crafts Master list published by Jianyang News on August 16, 2023. This is the documented Arts and Crafts Master designation used in this profile.[1]
Glazes and artistic character
The strongest recurring theme in the published Li Ying archive is oil drop (油滴). Guanfujianzhan records examples described as traditional silver oil drop, silver spots on a black ground, and partridge-feather oil drop (鹧鸪斑油滴).[2]
In Jian ware generally, iron-bearing glazes develop their distinctive crystalline effects during firing. Oil-drop patterns read as separate spots, while hare’s-fur patterns appear as fine streaks. The National Museum of China describes the extraordinary variety of decoration produced by iron-oxide crystallization in Jian ware.[3]
Documented forms and works
The Guanfujianzhan archive includes rounded bowl forms described as 钵型, along with taller aroma cups (闻香杯). Its entries also document black-ground silver-spotted cups and traditional silver oil-drop examples. The archive identifies several as handmade and describes some as substantial in the hand.[2]
Recognition
City-level Arts and Crafts Master: Li Ying is included in the 2023 published Jianyang list.[1] A separate Fujian Ceramic Industry Association award announcement for the third Minyi Cup’s Nanping competition lists Li Ying with the work 黑底银斑, translated here as “Silver Spots on a Black Ground.”[4]
