About Sun Fukun

Sun Fukun is a Jian Zhan ceramic artist from Jianyang, Fujian,
born in 1966. His work is closely associated with the revival,
preservation and continuing development of Jian ware firing
traditions in the modern era.

His representative work centers particularly on
Partridge Spot 鹧鸪斑. His official artist biography
describes his partridge-patterned bowls as an important part of
his artistic practice, with layered spotting and glaze patterns
developed through firing rather than painted decoration.

His broader body of work includes Oil Spot 油滴, Hare’s Fur 兔毫,
wood-fired pieces and more contemporary blue, red, gold and
iridescent kiln transformations.

His career also includes teaching, industry leadership,
publication, technical development and the training of other
Jian Zhan makers.

Intangible Cultural Heritage

Jianyao Jian Zhan Firing Technique 建窑建盏烧制技艺
was included in China’s third batch of national intangible
cultural heritage representative projects in 2011 as project
VIII-188.

Sun Fukun’s documented representative-inheritor appointments
are regional:

December 2013

Named by the Jianyang municipal cultural and sports authority
as one of the first representative inheritors of Jianyao
Jian Zhan firing technique in Jianyang.

December 2017

Recognized by the Nanping municipal government as a
representative inheritor of Jianyao Jian Zhan firing technique
at the Nanping municipal level.

Heritage note: the firing technique itself is a national
intangible cultural heritage project. China’s official national
intangible cultural heritage database lists Sun Jianxing 孙建兴
as the national-level representative inheritor for project VIII-188.
This is distinct from Sun Fukun’s regional representative-inheritor
recognition.

Glazes & Artistic Style

Sun Fukun works across both historically rooted Jian Zhan
glaze families and more contemporary interpretations.

Oil Spot 油滴

Crystalline spotted surfaces formed through glaze chemistry,
kiln atmosphere and high-temperature firing.

Hare’s Fur 兔毫

Fine streaked patterns associated with some of the most
recognizable historical Jian ware surfaces.

Contemporary Effects

His work also includes blue, red, rose-gold, sparkling
and galaxy-like interpretations of Jian Zhan glaze.
