About Cai Zhenjie

Cai Zhenjie (蔡镇杰) is a contemporary Jian ware craftsman associated with Shuiji in Jianyang, Fujian, the historic center of Jian ware production.

Collector documentation accompanying his work identifies him as the craftsman of Jian ware produced with an iron body (铁胎) and mineral glaze (矿物釉). His name appears prominently on the accompanying booklet as 蔡镇杰手作, meaning “handmade by Cai Zhenjie.”

Cai is particularly associated with richly iridescent glaze effects in which blue, violet, silver, rose and bronze tones shift with changing light. Among the named works attributed to him is 七彩祥云, commonly translated as “Seven-Color Auspicious Clouds.”

七彩祥云 · Seven-Color Auspicious Clouds

七彩祥云 is the clearest documented named glaze or work currently associated with Cai Zhenjie.

The name combines 七彩, referring to many colors or a spectrum of colors, with 祥云, the traditional Chinese motif of auspicious or fortunate clouds. In Cai’s work, the name suits a surface that can change dramatically according to viewing angle and illumination.

The documented example shown on this page develops a radiant field of fine iridescent markings extending outward from the center, with larger rounded crystalline markings appearing nearer the upper interior wall. Depending on the light, the glaze can reveal blue, violet, pink, silver and warm metallic tones.

Chinese auction listings also attribute cups titled 七彩祥云 directly to 蔡镇杰, providing outside confirmation of the association between the craftsman and this named work.

Materials & Jian Ware Tradition

The certificate accompanying the documented cup describes its materials as:

材质:铁胎、矿物釉
Material: Iron body, mineral glaze

These materials place the work within the characteristic material vocabulary of Jian ware: a dark iron-rich ceramic body paired with glaze chemistry capable of producing highly variable surface effects during firing.

The certificate further records the place of production as:

产地:建阳 · 水吉
Place of Origin: Jianyang · Shuiji

Shuiji is especially significant to Jian ware history because the historic Jian kilns were concentrated in this area of present-day Jianyang.

Booklet & Collector Documentation

Marks, Name & Attribution

Cai Zhenjie’s Chinese name is written 蔡镇杰. The collector booklet uses the wording 蔡镇杰手作, identifying the piece as handmade by Cai Zhenjie.

The accompanying collection certificate names the piece 七彩祥云 and includes a stamp and handwritten signature in the 工艺师 (“craftsman”) field.

For collectors, the combination of the Chinese name, named glaze, documentation and accompanying presentation materials provides a useful reference when comparing other pieces attributed to Cai Zhenjie.

Collector Notes

Cai Zhenjie’s work is especially recognizable for its luminous, color-shifting surfaces. Photographs can capture only part of the effect, since reflected light and viewing angle can strongly alter the colors visible across the glaze.

When identifying examples attributed to him, collectors can compare the Chinese name 蔡镇杰, accompanying documentation, and the named 七彩祥云 work with the examples preserved here.

Auction-market records are also useful as secondary references. Multiple Jian ware auction listings use the exact attribution 蔡镇杰 together with 七彩祥云, including listings describing a 9.1 cm Jianyang Jian ware cup.
