ZHAO LIMEI

About the Artist: Zhao Limei (赵丽美)

Master of Beiji Jianyao · Advocate of Traditional Craftsmanship

Zhao Limei (赵丽美) is a nationally certified senior ceramic artist and a highly regarded torchbearer of China’s intangible cultural heritage. As a direct apprentice of master Li Yumei, she has deeply studied traditional Jian ware firing techniques, particularly those from the Song Dynasty. Her studio, Beiji Jianyao (北极建盏), has gained admiration for its refined reproduction of ancient styles using wood-fired kilns and locally sourced clays.

Having grown up near the historical Jianyang kiln region, Zhao Limei has devoted decades to preserving, studying, and evolving the art of Jian ware. She is widely respected for her meticulous techniques and dedication to authentic Song-style glazes, especially her celebrated “Black Peony” (黑牡丹) series — known for its deep black glaze that shimmers with blue and golden hues.
