About Xie Zhensheng

Xie Zhensheng is a contemporary Jian Zhan artist from Jianyang,
Fujian, born in March 1981.

His artist biography records that he began formally studying
Jian Zhan making and firing in 2014 under
Xie Songqing 谢松青, an established Jian Zhan
maker and heritage practitioner from Shuiji.

Xie Zhensheng’s work includes both historically rooted Jian Zhan
glaze families and highly colorful contemporary kiln
transformations.

His best documented modern work is associated with vivid,
light-reactive glaze surfaces, particularly his
Rainbow Jian Zhan 彩虹盏 series.

Training Under Xie Songqing 谢松青

Xie Zhensheng’s published biography states that in 2014 he
studied Jian Zhan production and firing techniques under
Xie Songqing.

Xie Songqing is a long-established Jian Zhan collector,
researcher and maker from Houjing Village in Shuiji Town,
an area closely connected with the historic Jian kiln complex.

Current Jianyang cultural reporting identifies Xie Songqing as
a Nanping municipal-level representative inheritor
of Jianyao Jian Zhan firing technique and as a Fujian arts
and crafts master.

Jian Zhan & Intangible Cultural Heritage

Jianyao Jian Zhan Firing Technique 建窑建盏烧制技艺
was included in China’s national intangible cultural heritage
list in 2011.

Xie Zhensheng works within this living Jianyang ceramic tradition,
but the heritage status of the craft itself should be distinguished
from formal government designation of an individual representative
inheritor.

A formal government listing naming Xie Zhensheng himself as a
national, provincial or municipal representative inheritor has
not been located in the sources reviewed for this profile.

Rainbow Jian Zhan 彩虹盏

Colorful glaze development is one of the most recognizable
directions in Xie Zhensheng’s work.

His artist materials identify him closely with
彩虹盏, or Rainbow Jian Zhan, and describe him
as an early developer of strongly multicolored Jian Zhan glaze
effects.

These surfaces can display combinations of blue, violet, green,
gold, red and silver coloration depending on the firing,
crystalline development and angle of light.

The effect is not simply painted color. Much of the visual
character comes from glaze chemistry, crystallization,
kiln atmosphere and the interaction of light with the
fired surface.

Wood-Fired Work 柴烧

Wood firing forms another documented part of Xie Zhensheng’s
practice.

His recorded works include wood-fired Partridge Spot,
tea-dust-style glaze, multicolored wood-fired Jian Zhan and the
series identified as 宋影柴烧.

As with other Jian Zhan makers who work across more than one
kiln method, electric or wood firing should be recorded with
the individual piece when documentation is available rather
than assumed from the artist name alone.

Yuxi 御曦

The name 御曦 appears prominently throughout
Xie Zhensheng’s artist material and packaging.

Published biographies connect the Yuxi ceramic practice with
Xie Zhensheng beginning around 2018.

In 2019, actress Hu Caihong 胡彩虹 publicly promoted the
Yuxi Rainbow Jian Zhan brand. Contemporary archived material
from that period also connects her name directly with
Xie Zhensheng’s 彩虹盏.

A separate Xie Zhensheng Jian Zhan ceramic studio is documented
in published biography by 2022.
