About the Studio

The studio’s vessels often depart from perfectly symmetrical forms. Faceted walls, carved areas, irregular edges, compressed surfaces, and changing planes allow the pattern of the clay itself to become part of the sculpture.
Tianzhu Series

One of the studio’s most recognizable bodies of work is the Tianzhu Series (天珠系列).
The series uses layers of contrasting ceramic material to create dramatic rings, eyes, waves, bands, and organic formations throughout the body of the vessel.
Black, cream, brown, gray, and earthy tones appear in complex repeating patterns. Because the designs run through and interact with the clay body, cutting, carving, twisting, or altering the vessel exposes different sections of the pattern.
This creates an especially striking effect on sculptural pieces. A single vessel can look dramatically different as it is turned in the hand.
From Clay to Kiln
The studio’s photographs also document the firing environment behind the finished work.
Ceramic pieces are arranged within the kiln using shelves, supports, and protective firing structures. The final surface of a fired piece reflects not only the material and forming process, but also its experience inside the kiln.

Ceramic Artist & Craftsman
Su Guobi (苏国笔), born in 1986, is a ceramic artist associated with Muchun Wood-Fired Ceramics.
His collector biography lists his ancestral home as Dehua County, Quanzhou, Fujian Province.
According to the documentation accompanying his work, Su grew up immersed in Dehua’s traditional ceramic culture and began studying arts and crafts in Fujian in 2002.
His practice developed around traditional ceramic production, ceramic sculpture, kiln firing, clay modeling, and wood-firing techniques.
His work combines traditional ceramic methods with contemporary sculptural design.
