About You Hui

You Hui (游辉) is a Jian Zhan master based in
Shuiji, Jianyang and the artist behind
Tongtian No. 1 Studio (通天壹号).
He owns and works with a traditional dragon kiln and focuses primarily
on wood-fired Jian Zhan.

His work is particularly known for vivid and highly variable kiln effects.
Against the dark iron-rich foundation of Jian ware, his glazes can develop
gold, silver, blue, pink-purple and other colors, often accompanied by
dramatic crystalline structures.

The appearance can shift significantly as a cup is moved beneath different
lighting, causing individual crystals and metallic areas to brighten,
disappear or change color with the viewing angle.

According to You Hui, high-grade examples have an extremely low success rate.
The most exceptional surfaces depend not only on preparation and firing skill,
but also on the unpredictable conditions that develop naturally within the
dragon kiln.

Tongtian No. 1 Studio & Dragon Kiln

You Hui works under the studio name
Tongtian No. 1 (通天壹号).
His documentation also uses the wording
通天壹号龙窑柴烧, identifying work as wood-fired
in the Tongtian No. 1 Dragon Kiln.

A traditional dragon kiln is a long climbing kiln fired with wood.
Conditions vary throughout the chamber as heat, flame, ash, oxygen and
reduction shift over the course of the firing.

This variation is central to You Hui’s work. Even pieces placed in the same
firing can emerge with noticeably different crystalline structures,
coloration and flame effects depending on their position within the kiln.

Craft Features

Original-Ore Iron Clay

You Hui uses an original-ore iron-rich clay body together with
high-temperature wood firing under strong reduction. The combination
provides the dark foundation and intense kiln environment needed for
the powerful glaze development characteristic of his work.

Colorful Crystalline Effects

His specialties include colorful oil-drop,
colorful partridge-spot and
multicolored hare’s-fur glazes.

Golden droplets, silver-sand-like effects, pink-purple coloration and
blue crystals can emerge over the black glaze ground. Many of these
colors become more or less visible as the cup is turned under the light.

Fiery Visual Character

You Hui describes his work as having a strong fiery character with
rich and eye-catching visual effects. The result is intentionally very
different from the restrained grey appearance associated with traditional
Huibei glaze (灰被釉).

Glaze & Kiln Effects

Documented examples of You Hui’s work demonstrate the vivid crystalline
colors that distinguish many of his wood-fired pieces.

星河落盏,窑变万千

“A galaxy falls into the cup, with countless kiln transformations.”

每一件,都是宇宙的独一无二

“Every piece is unique in the universe.”

The imagery reflects the importance of variation in You Hui’s work.
Each position within a wood-fired dragon kiln experiences a slightly
different combination of flame, temperature, reduction and ash, allowing
individual pieces to develop their own surface character.

Signature Glaze Directions

Colorful Oil Drop

Rounded crystalline spots emerge over the dark glaze with gold,
silver, blue and other shifting colors.

Colorful Partridge Spot

Dense spotted effects develop across the glaze with metallic and
multicolored variation.

Multicolored Hare’s Fur

Elongated crystalline streaks create hare’s-fur-like movement while
retaining the colorful character of You Hui’s firing style.

Representative Works

Shooting-Star Moon Chase

Named by You Hui among his representative works, this style emphasizes
luminous crystalline movement across the dark glaze, evoking light
moving through a night sky.

Star-Sea Silver Sand

Dense golden and silver crystals spread across the interior of the cup,
producing a field of reflective points reminiscent of a star-filled galaxy.

Representative-work names and descriptions were provided directly by You Hui.

“Purple Grape” · 紫葡萄

A booklet accompanying You Hui’s work prominently displays the term
紫葡萄, literally “Purple Grape,” alongside images of a
vivid blue-purple crystalline surface.

The rounded markings form dense clusters across the glaze, while individual
crystals can shift among purple, blue and other colors as the viewing angle
and lighting change.

The wording 紫葡萄 is retained here as it appears in the
accompanying material rather than being presented as a universal technical
classification for Jian Zhan glaze.
