Cai Bing Sheng (蔡炳盛)
Jianzhan Artist • Ceramic Arts Master • Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative Inheritor
Cai Bing Sheng (蔡炳盛), born in 1956 in Jianyang, Fujian, comes from a family deeply connected to traditional Jian ware craftsmanship. His ancestors were involved in ceramic firing for generations, giving him an early foundation in traditional kiln techniques and ceramic culture.
Beginning independent research into Jian ware firing techniques in 1982, Cai Bing Sheng dedicated decades to studying the restoration and innovation of traditional Jianzhan. He became especially recognized for his silver-blue oil spot (银蓝油滴) glaze works, combining classical Jian ware aesthetics with modern artistic refinement.
His works are known for rich oil-spot textures, metallic luster, deep black glaze tones, and complex kiln transformations created through high-temperature firing. While rooted in traditional Jian kiln methods, his creations also explore new artistic expressions and contemporary presentation styles.
Beyond ceramic creation, Cai Bing Sheng has also contributed to the academic and cultural preservation side of Jianzhan. He published research papers discussing Jian ware firing techniques and wood-firing processes, helping preserve and document traditional methods for future generations.
