Biography

Wu Liyong (吴立勇), born in February 1968 in Houjing Village, Shuiji, Jianyang, is a contemporary Jian Zhan maker whose practice is strongly oriented toward the forms and surfaces of historical Song-dynasty Jian ware. Published biographies record that he began collecting and studying Jian Zhan in 1992, building familiarity with surviving antique bowls before moving more deeply into glaze and firing research.

He later studied glaze formulation with Dehua glaze specialist Li Wenzhong (李文忠). In 2016 he established Jianzhou Jian Zhan Ceramics Co., Ltd., continuing research into locally rooted Jian bodies, mineral glaze materials and antique-inspired surface effects.

Song-Style Practice

Wu Liyong is especially associated with traditional rabbit-hair (兔毫) work. His documented practice also includes oil spot (油滴), persimmon red (柿红), black gold (乌金), tea-dust / tea-foam glaze (茶沫釉) and blue-return effects described as 回蓝.

The visual emphasis is generally on historical Jian ware character: iron-rich bodies, restrained classical forms and glaze effects produced through firing rather than applied decoration.

Heritage & Recognition

Published records identify Wu Liyong among Jianyang’s early representative inheritors of the Jian kiln / Jian Zhan firing technique. His 现代仿古兔毫盏 (“Modern Antique Hare’s-Fur Bowl”) entered the collection of Nanping Museum, and biographies record awards in Beijing, the Cross-Strait Cultural Industries Fair and Jingdezhen ceramic exhibitions during the mid-2010s.

Family

Wu Liyong is the brother of Wu Lizhu (吴立主). Both brothers became important figures in the modern Jianyang revival, but they developed distinct bodies of work and should be identified through their individual marks and documentation.
