Biography
Sun Fukun (孙福昆), born in 1966 in Shuiji, Jianyang, grew up in a ceramic family connected with the Jianyang Porcelain Factory. His mother worked in ceramic decoration and his father supervised kiln firing, giving him early exposure to clay preparation, forming, glazing and kiln work. He later became a prominent contemporary Jian Zhan maker associated especially with partridge-spot glaze research.
Luhuaping Jian Zhan
Sun founded Luhuaping Jian Zhan (芦花坪建盏), whose company history dates to August 2007. The workshop operates wood-fired and electric kilns, including a 36-meter dragon kiln, and produces classic hare’s-fur, oil-spot and partridge-spot surfaces alongside contemporary glaze variations.
Heritage & Professional Recognition
Sun was named among Jianyang’s first representative inheritors of the Jian kiln/Jian Zhan firing technique in December 2013 and was recognized at the Nanping municipal level in 2017. These are regional inheritor appointments; the national project itself is separately represented at national level by Sun Jianxing (孙建兴). Sun’s professional titles include Fujian Provincial Arts & Crafts Master, Fujian Ceramic Arts Master, Senior Arts & Crafts Artist and Senior Technician.
Glazes & Representative Work
Partridge spot (鹧鸪斑) is the glaze family most strongly associated with Sun Fukun’s representative work. His broader range includes oil spot, hare’s fur, wood-fired persimmon-red, rose-gold oil spot, blue oil spot and other contemporary kiln-transformation effects.
Awards, Collections & Research
Sun’s career includes awards from 2013 onward for hare’s-fur, oil-spot, partridge-spot and wood-fired work. Institutional collections include Nanping Museum, Fujian arts-and-crafts collections, Jingdezhen China Ceramics Museum, Fujian-Taiwan Kinship Museum and the National Art Museum of China.
His book 《芦花坪窑鹧鸪语》 was published by Fujian Fine Arts Publishing House in 2021. His professional record also includes design patents, a utility-model patent and published writing on Jian Zhan and tea culture.
Teaching & Family Transmission
Sun has trained later Jian Zhan makers and holds professional roles in Fujian ceramic and arts-and-crafts organizations. His son Sun Hanbing (孙寒冰) also works at Luhuaping and represents the next generation of the family’s Jian Zhan practice.
Marks & Identification
Known examples include artist marks, certificates and Luhuaping-branded presentation material. These should be considered together with the vessel and foot when identifying individual works.
