Biography

Shen Yuanwang (沈元旺), born in 1992, is a contemporary Jian Zhan artist from Fujian associated particularly with Yaobian-style glaze research. He entered the Jian Zhan field in 2010 and studied under Cai Long (蔡龙). In 2018 he established Nanping Jianyang Jiangling Jianzhan Culture Media Co., Ltd. (南平市建阳区匠领建盏文化传媒有限公司), where he serves in a technical leadership role.

Yaobian & Representative Works

Shen is closely associated with the term “第四块曜变” (“Fourth Yaobian”) in his public presentation. Documented works include 玄天曜变, 轩辕无上曜变, 日月同辉曜变, 第四块曜变 and 然曜. His work favors dark grounds, ringed crystalline spotting and strongly light-responsive blue, violet and multicolored effects.

Technical Work

Shen is one of the inventors named on Chinese patent CN113819758B, an environmental dragon-kiln design for Jian Zhan assigned to the Nanping Yaobian Ceramic Research Institute. The patent addresses kiln structure, smoke handling and firing infrastructure rather than identifying one particular glaze formula.

Recognition & Collections

Published exhibition records document 玄天曜变 in a 2020 Fujian handicraft exhibition and 轩辕无上曜变 receiving awards in major ceramic and arts-and-crafts competitions in 2021. Biographical records also list works entering the Jianyang District Museum, Nanping Museum and Fujian art institutions.

Marks & Identification

Certificates, base marks and complete vessel photographs should be considered together when identifying individual Shen Yuanwang works, especially because Yaobian-style surfaces are widely produced by multiple contemporary makers.
