Lin Yuanfu
林远福Zhiqian Jian Zhan 芝谦建盏 · glaze research · patented firing process
Biography
Lin Yuanfu (林远福) is a contemporary Jian Zhan maker working in Jianyang under the name Zhiqian Jian Zhan (芝谦建盏). His practice combines close study of historical Jian ware with repeated experimentation in mineral preparation, glaze layering, forming and kiln control.
A detailed 2018 account of his workshop describes Lin personally selecting material, grinding glaze minerals, throwing and trimming bowls, bisque firing, glazing and closely monitoring reduction stages. Rather than treating glaze as a purely accidental kiln effect, he records fuel, timing and temperature so that each firing can inform the next.
Zhiqian Jian Zhan · 芝谦建盏
Zhiqian Jian Zhan is the studio identity most closely associated with Lin Yuanfu. In 2018 the workshop was documented with two kilns in operation. In 2025, Nanping Jianyang District Zhiqian Jian Zhan Ceramic Factory was listed by China’s National Intellectual Property Administration among enterprises authorized to use the protected geographical-indication special mark for Jian Zhan.
Materials, Forming & Firing
Lin’s documented process begins with preparation of clay and glaze minerals and continues through throwing, trimming, bisque firing and glazing. Reduction firing receives particular attention. One workshop account describes carefully timed reduction stages using resin and resin-rich pinewood, with firing variables recorded in notebooks for comparison.
Patented Jian Zhan Process
Lin Yuanfu is the named inventor of Chinese invention patent CN114907096B, filed June 8, 2022 and granted April 9, 2024. The process applies two glaze mixtures in layers before electric-kiln firing. The patent describes pale milk-white markings layered with darker gold-centered spots that overlap and flow into a highly textured surface.
Study of Historical Jian Ware
Lin’s work also includes deliberate comparison with historical Jian ware fragments. Surviving presentation material places modern bowls beside Song-period glaze references to examine color, flow, body and surface structure. The comparison reflects a research-oriented approach to contemporary Jian ware rather than an attempt to present modern work as archaeological material.
Documented Works
金凤玉露 (Jinfeng Yulu) develops pale blue-grey areas with flowing gold and brown crystalline markings. 灰贝 (Huibei) is a restrained grey-white surface with darker iron-rich rim. 春意 (Chunyi, “Spring Feeling”) was the work that prompted the 2018 extended studio interview and discussion of Lin’s firing process.
Professional Roles
Lin’s professional profile lists credentials including Senior Ceramic Crafts Artist, Intermediate Arts & Crafts Artist, Arts & Crafts Designer, Fujian Handicraft Master, Fujian Arts & Crafts Notable Artist and National Level-One Senior Technician, together with memberships in national, provincial and Jianyang craft organizations.
Marks & Identification
The strongest identification links the maker name with the Zhiqian studio, documented work title, certificate and complete vessel.
