Biography
Liao Shesheng (廖设生), born in 1966, is one of the experienced makers who entered Jian ware production soon after the late-twentieth-century revival of the craft. He graduated in 1987 from Xiamen Jimei Light Industry School with a specialization in ceramic technology and was assigned to the Jianyang Porcelain Factory as a technician, where he continued studying Jian kiln/Jian Zhan firing.
That factory background placed him among an early generation of post-revival makers working directly with technical specialists and experimental production. In 2010 he founded Huasheng Jian Zhan Ceramics Co., Ltd. (华生建盏陶瓷有限公司).
Glaze Development
Liao’s documented glaze work includes rabbit hair, silver hare’s fur, partridge spot, oil drop, meteor oil drop, starry oil drop and two-polarity surfaces. He also developed large oil-drop vases and other forms beyond the standard tea bowl.
祥云柿红 · Auspicious Cloud Persimmon Red
One of Liao Shesheng’s best-known developments is 祥云柿红, a persimmon-red Jian Zhan in which cloud-like markings emerge across the glaze. The work extends a traditional persimmon-red palette with a more distinctive surface pattern while retaining an iron body and mineral glaze.
Recognition & Heritage
In 2015 Liao became a representative inheritor of Jian kiln/Jian Zhan making in Jianyang District and received a Nanping ceramic arts-and-crafts title. In 2017 he was named a fifth-batch Nanping representative inheritor. His later professional record includes Fujian senior ceramic technician and Fujian ceramic art master recognition.
Marks & Identification
The artist’s correct Chinese name is 廖设生. His maker seal, certificate and Huasheng presentation materials are useful identification anchors for individual works.
