Lian Dan
廉丹Jian Zhan artisan · Shuiji, Jianyang · mineral glaze work
Biography
Lian Dan (廉丹) is a Jian Zhan ceramic artist working in Shuiji, Jianyang, the historic center of the Jian kiln tradition. His work uses the dense iron-rich body and mineral-glaze vocabulary associated with contemporary Jian ware while keeping the forms grounded in functional tea bowls.
Materials & Technique
Documented pieces use original mineral glaze (原矿釉), iron-rich clay (铁胎) and plant ash (草木灰). These materials are fired to produce layered crystalline and oil-spot effects, with color ranging from deep blue-black to brighter galaxy-like and milk-drop surfaces.
Forms & Surface
Lian Dan’s bowls favor classic Jian proportions: substantial walls, a deep profile and a grounded foot. The glaze remains the main visual focus, with natural variation from firing creating differences in spotting, crystallization and reflective depth from piece to piece.
Marks & Identification
Documented work is accompanied by a signature and certificate identifying production in Shuiji, Jianyang. Those materials, together with the vessel and its base, provide the strongest attribution.
