Huang Yuxi
黄雨茜Jian Zhan artisan · oil-drop glaze · new-generation work
Biography
Huang Yuxi (黄雨茜) is a contemporary female Jian Zhan artisan representing a younger generation of makers in Jianyang. Her early interest in collecting and studying Jian ware eventually led her fully into kiln work and glaze development. She studied under Cai Long and later focused her own practice on oil-drop surfaces.
Huang is a graduate of the Department of Art at Quanzhou Normal University and is a member of the Arts & Crafts Committee of the Fujian Ceramic Industry Association. In 2022 she was named an Outstanding Individual of the Year in Jianyang District, and her work has entered the Jianyang District Museum collection.
Oil-Drop Practice
Her work develops oil-drop glaze through layered color, smooth luster and carefully controlled crystalline fields. Rather than aiming for a single repeatable surface, Huang embraces the idea of “a thousand cups, a thousand faces”, allowing natural firing variation to remain visible in each finished piece.
The visual language ranges from cloudlike fields to fine starry speckling, with color moving across multiple layers of the glaze. She treats fire not simply as a production tool but as a creative partner in the final surface.
Selected Works
In a 2023 Jian Zhan fine-art exhibition, Huang Yuxi appeared as a 建盏烧制工艺师 with three named works: 彩莲, 惜 and 瑞雪.
Artistic Outlook
Huang’s stated philosophy connects craftsmanship with long-term responsibility rather than production alone. Her practice follows the work from throwing and glazing through the uncertainty of firing, using that uncertainty as a source of individuality instead of trying to erase it.
Marks & Identification
Her name, certificate or exhibition title should be considered together with the complete vessel when attributing individual works.
