He Dingxin
何定欣Jian Zhan maker · Jianyang · 鹧鸪斑 Partridge Spot
Biography
He Dingxin (何定欣) is a contemporary Jian Zhan maker from the Jianyang/Shuiji ceramic community. His name is most strongly associated with 鹧鸪斑, Partridge Spot, and his work explores the pattern through dark silver, gold, red-toned and multicolored variations.
He studied under veteran Jian Zhan artist Chen Dapeng (陈大鹏), a teacher-student relationship consistently associated with his Partridge Spot work.
鹧鸪斑 · Partridge Spot
His Partridge Spot variations include 金羽鹧鸪, 红羽鹧鸪, 黑羽鹧鸪 and 空谷幽兰. Some pieces develop dense fine spotting, while others produce larger feather-like or radiating formations with strong metallic reflection.
The historical term 鹧鸪斑 is retained in Chinese because it is more specific than simply calling every example “oil spot.” Modern scholarship and collecting language do not always use the two terms in exactly the same way.
Making & Forms
He Dingxin’s work appears in traditional bowls, smaller cups, sets and more sculptural contemporary forms. His work includes 全手工 (fully handmade) construction, 原矿釉 (raw mineral glaze), Shuiji iron-rich clay, plant ash and, on some pieces, 全包釉 (full glaze coverage). Both electric-fired and wood-fired pieces appear under his name, so the firing method is not uniform across his entire output.
Marks & Identification
Base marks, artist certificates and presentation boxes commonly accompany his work. The strongest attribution comes from considering the maker name, vessel, mark, certificate and glaze style together.
