About Chen Yuanfu
Chen Yuanfu (陈远福) is a Jian ware artist in Jianyang, Fujian, known especially for the 红梅 · Red Plum glaze family. His relationship with Jian ware began through collecting and studying older Jian bowls in the 1990s. In 2009, he formally studied Jian ware firing with Xu Jiayou 许家有.
That background in historical bowls informed work with established Jian ware effects such as rabbit-hair, oil-spot and partridge-pattern surfaces before he concentrated on developing the Red Plum glaze.
Red Plum · 红梅
Chen’s best-documented signature work is his Red Plum glaze. A 2025 profile describes an intensive development period from 2015 through 2017, with more than one hundred glaze trials before a successful breakthrough in 2017. The resulting surface uses clustered red-toned crystalline markings against the darker Jian ware body, recalling plum blossoms opening across the bowl.
The Red Plum family later expanded into multiple variations while remaining the clearest identifying thread in Chen Yuanfu’s contemporary work.
