About Chen Liuxing
Chen Liuxing (陈柳兴) is a Jian Zhan artisan from Shuiji in Jianyang, Fujian. His practice is built around the materials that define the local ware: iron-rich clay, mineral glazes and high-temperature firing.
He works across oil-drop, hare’s-fur and kiln-transformed surfaces, allowing the glaze to respond to heat, atmosphere and cooling rather than forcing every piece toward an identical finish. Dense spotting, long streaks and shifting metallic color can all appear within this vocabulary.
Chen also works with more than one firing environment. Wood-fired dragon-kiln pieces emphasize flame, ash and the changing atmosphere of a long kiln, while electric firing provides greater control for technical glaze development.
Wood & Electric Firing
The contrast between wood and electric firing is an important part of Chen Liuxing’s practice. Dragon-kiln firing introduces variation from flame path, ash and position within the chamber. Electric firing offers a more controlled temperature curve for refining glaze behavior.
Together, the two approaches allow his work to move between the unpredictability of traditional firing and the precision of modern kiln research.
