About Chen Hong
Chen Hong (陳紅 / 陈红) is a contemporary lacquer artist from Jian’ou, Fujian, working within the wider Fuzhou bodiless lacquer tradition. Existing FSOC documentation identifies lacquer artist Chen Tiangan 陈天灨 as an important teacher in her training.
Her practice centers on 脱胎漆器, or bodiless lacquerware. Tea vessels and sculptural forms are built through repeated lacquer work, surface refinement and polishing, allowing color and pattern to become an integral part of the finished object.
Fuzhou Bodiless Lacquer · 脱胎漆器
Bodiless lacquerware is made by building a lacquered shell over a temporary form and then refining the remaining lightweight body through repeated coating, decorating and polishing. The tradition is officially recognized in Fujian’s intangible cultural heritage records.
Chen Hong’s documented works use this light structure as a surface for layered color, flowing bands and mineral-like patterning, especially on small tea vessels intended to be viewed closely in the hand.
Marks & Identification
Because lacquer surfaces and vessel forms can vary considerably, the maker name should be considered together with certificates, packaging, provenance and complete photographs when identifying an individual work.
