About Chen Guohui
Chen Guohui (陈国辉) is a contemporary Jian Zhan artist from Jianyang, Fujian. In 2014 he established 星座之路建盏工作室, a studio centered on a series of Jian ware inspired by the twelve zodiac signs and the imagery of the night sky.
Rather than giving the entire series one repeated glaze, Chen pairs different signs with different surfaces. Pisces appears in purple-gold oil spot, Taurus in a glassy gold oil spot, Aquarius in blue oil spot, Leo in seven-color Jian ware, Scorpio in seven-color oil spot, and Sagittarius in a starry-sky oil spot.
The series gives his work a recognizable visual language: dark iron-rich clay beneath metallic crystals, colored flashes and dense speckled patterns that suggest constellations or distant light. The traditional Jian Zhan body remains the foundation, while the glaze palette pushes the work toward a more contemporary, celestial character.
Zodiac Jianzhan Studio · 星座之路建盏工作室
Chen’s studio identity is closely tied to the zodiac series. The idea is not simply decorative naming. Each sign is treated as an individual work within a larger family, with its own glaze color and surface behavior.
This approach makes the series especially easy to recognize as a body of work: the pieces share a cosmic theme, but the visual effect changes from sign to sign.
