Cao Lizhen
曹丽珍Jian Zhan artisan · 蝶舞 · iridescent crystalline glaze work
Biography
Cao Lizhen (曹丽珍) is a contemporary Jian Zhan artisan working in Jianyang. Her titles include 民间匠人 (folk artisan) and 高级工艺师 (senior craft artist). Her interest in Jian Zhan began early and developed through years of study and experimentation.
Her practice combines the iron-rich body and glaze-driven character of Jian ware with a more contemporary interest in luminous color and highly visible crystalline structure. Her work emphasizes iron-like clay bodies, restrained forms, clear crystallization and metallic surface effects, often pushing those qualities into vivid blue, violet, turquoise, gold, silver and red-toned iridescence.
蝶舞 · Butterfly Dance
蝶舞, “Butterfly Dance,” is the most recognizable named line associated with Cao Lizhen. Branching and feathered crystalline structures spread across an iridescent ground, creating the impression of layered wings as the vessel turns in the light. Cao has extended the Butterfly Dance language beyond a standard bowl to coordinated tea-service forms.
Selected Works
Her named works include 蝶舞 (Butterfly Dance), 佛肚 (Buddha Belly) and 油滴双面釉 (Double-Sided Oil Spot). Her catalog also includes Butterfly Dance tea-service pieces labeled 蝶舞回风 and 蝶舞公道盖碗, showing that the glaze concept has been applied across different vessel forms.
Artistic Outlook
Cao’s artist statement centers on making calm, comfortable vessels for tea and finding a quieter rhythm through clay. Her work treats variation as part of the finished object: two pieces from the same glaze family can differ significantly because crystallization and iridescence respond to firing conditions. Her practice includes electric-kiln-fired work alongside the broader Jian Zhan vocabulary of her making.
Jian Zhan Heritage
Cao works within the contemporary community surrounding 建窑建盏烧制技艺, the Jian kiln/Jian Zhan firing tradition entered on China’s national intangible-cultural-heritage list in 2011. That designation belongs to the craft tradition itself rather than automatically functioning as a personal title for every practitioner.
Marks & Identification
Attribution is strongest when the artist name is considered together with the booklet, certificate, vessel form and the distinctive crystalline treatment of the documented work.
