Cai Zhenjie
蔡镇杰Jian Zhan craftsman · Shuiji, Jianyang · 七彩祥云
Biography
Cai Zhenjie (蔡镇杰) is a contemporary Jian Zhan craftsman associated with Shuiji in Jianyang, Fujian. A collection certificate for his work identifies the place of origin as 建阳·水吉 and the materials as an iron body (铁胎) with mineral glaze (矿物釉). His booklet uses the wording 蔡镇杰手作, meaning “handmade by Cai Zhenjie.”
His work is represented by intensely iridescent Jian Zhan in which blue, violet, rose, silver and warm metallic tones shift as the bowl moves through light. This color-changing character is especially prominent in the named work 七彩祥云, translated as “Seven-Color Auspicious Clouds.”
七彩祥云 · Seven-Color Auspicious Clouds
In 七彩祥云, fine radiant markings spread from the center, with larger rounded crystalline forms appearing higher on the interior wall. The name combines 七彩, a spectrum or many colors, with 祥云, auspicious clouds. 七彩祥云 is used as a named title for Cai Zhenjie’s Jian Zhan rather than as a generic color description.
Materials & Making
The certificate’s combination of iron body and mineral glaze places the work firmly within the material language of contemporary Jian ware. The visual effect depends on glaze chemistry and firing rather than painted decoration, so the same bowl can appear restrained in diffuse light and dramatically more colorful under direct illumination.
Marks & Identification
The maker name, the 七彩祥云 title, the certificate, signature and presentation materials form the strongest identification set for Cai Zhenjie’s work. The certificate also carries a stamp and handwritten signature in the 工艺师 (“craftsman”) field.
