About Bai Ding Ceramics Studio
Bai Ding Ceramics Studio (白丁瓷坊) is a contemporary Jian ware workshop in Jianyang, Fujian. Established in 2015, the studio developed as a collaborative ceramic practice rather than the personal name of a single maker.
Bai Ding combines the dark, iron-rich character of Jian ware with a more contemporary approach to form and decoration. Its pieces range from familiar tea-bowl shapes to pedestal cups, plates, pulled or flared forms and compact rounded vessels.
Craftspeople associated with the workshop include Huang Xiangdi 黄祥迪 and Luo Renjie 罗仁杰. On pieces where an individual maker is named, the maker and the Bai Ding workshop identity can both be important parts of the attribution.
Workshop & Approach
The studio’s work reflects a mix of traditional Jian ceramic practice and experimentation. Bai Ding has used supported firing methods such as 托底烧 and 护烧, allowing greater freedom in how glaze and form meet around the lower body and foot.
Carving and decorative work using copper and silver also appear in the studio’s practice. These details give many Bai Ding pieces a more sculptural character while keeping the dark glaze and mineral-rich visual language associated with Jian ware.
