About Cai Bingkun

Cai Bingkun (蔡炳昆) was born in July 1949 in Houjing Village, Shuiji, Jianyang, Fujian, near the historic Jian kiln region. His father was a traditional potter, and Cai began learning clay preparation, wheel throwing and glazing from him at about thirteen years old.

After military service and a long technical career, Cai gradually returned to ceramic work. He began sustained Jian Zhan experimentation in the 1990s and moved into full-time practice after leaving the factory in 2004.

His later work centered on crystalline black glazes and the careful control needed to produce hare’s-fur, oil-spot and other kiln-transformed effects.

The Cai Brothers

Cai Bingkun is the eldest of the three Cai brothers closely associated with modern Jian ware in Shuiji: Cai Bingkun 蔡炳昆, Cai Binglong 蔡炳龙 and Cai Bingsheng 蔡炳盛.

Although they shared the same family ceramic background, each brother developed an individual body of work, glaze research and maker identity. Cai Bingkun established the 蔡氏建盏 workshop in Jianyang.

Glazes & Ceramic Work

Cai Bingkun’s Jian Zhan practice developed through repeated experiments with crystalline black glazes. Hare’s-fur was an important early direction, followed by broader work in oil spot, blue hare’s-fur and other kiln-transformed surfaces.

兔毫Hare’s fur · one of his early successful Jian glaze directions.
蓝兔毫Blue hare’s fur · a later development in his workshop practice.
银油滴Silver oil spot · repeatedly associated with his work.
异毫 / 曜变Experimental hair-pattern and kiln-transformed effects also appear in his work.
FormsHis production extends beyond tea bowls to meiping, vases, gaiwan and other tea ware.

Awards & Recognition

In 2015, an oil-spot work by Cai Bingkun received a Gold Award at the Third China “Golden Arts Award” International Arts and Crafts Innovation Design Competition. His 《束口银油滴盏》 also received a Silver Award in the “Excellent Chinese Craft Works” competition associated with the Cross-Strait Cultural Industries Fair.

A 2017 Nanping municipal list includes Cai Bingkun among representative inheritors for 建盏制作技艺(建阳).

Teaching & Lineage

Cai Bingkun’s first pottery teacher was his father, who introduced him to the practical foundations of ceramic work while he was still young.

Later, Cai became part of the next generation’s training as well. Biographical material for Jian Zhan craftsman Ye Yiyun 叶义云 identifies Cai Bingkun as one of Ye’s teachers.
