Huang Wenhua & Huang Yue
A husband-and-wife studio in Jianyang combining contemporary Jian Zhan making,
wood and electric firing, custom forms, hand-carved calligraphy, Song poetry,
tea culture and modern ceramic design.

to Fifty Shades of Clay by Huang Yue (Grace), August 2026.
Fifty Shades of Clay is in direct communication with Huang Yue, who also uses
the English name Grace on TikTok.
New photographs supplied directly by her are identified as artist-supplied
material on this page.
This direct contact also gives FSOC an opportunity to verify marks, individual
authorship, firing methods and studio history rather than relying entirely on
reseller descriptions.

Two Artists, One Studio
Earlier English descriptions of Heyuan often centered almost entirely on Huang Wenhua.
The Chinese record presents a fuller story. Huang Wenhua and Huang Yue are both
important figures in the development and artistic identity of Heyuan.
Current Heyuan material identifies Huang Wenhua as founder of the
Heyuan Shanyin Jian Zhan Life Experience Hall and Huang Yue
as its principal or manager. Interestingly, an earlier 2018 article described
Huang Yue as the founder of Heyuan Jian Zhan and stated that
she established the Heyuan Jian Zhan Culture Company.
These descriptions do not necessarily conflict. They appear to refer to different
stages or parts of the developing Heyuan business: the earlier company and brand,
and the later Heyuan Shanyin experience hall. Together they show that Huang Yue’s
involvement in Heyuan is longstanding and substantial.
Huang Wenhua · 黄文华
Huang Wenhua is a contemporary Jian Zhan maker from Jianyang. Published
biographical material places his birth in 1991 and identifies Wu Zhoufu
(吴周福) as his teacher.
In 2021, Xinhua documented Huang after he returned to Jianyang following
time away from the region. He established a Jian Zhan life-experience space
in Yandun Village and used livestreaming to introduce viewers to the making process.
Huang is now officially identified in Jianyang reporting as a
district-level representative inheritor of the Jian kiln / Jian Zhan
firing technique.
The current Heyuan biography additionally lists him as one of Nanping’s
recognized folk-art figures and as a technical expert within Fujian’s
light-industry sector.
Teacher & Lineage
A published 2023 biographical listing identifies Huang Wenhua as a student
of Jian Zhan artist and heritage craftsman
Wu Zhoufu · 吴周福
.
Wu Zhoufu is especially associated with crystalline oil-drop work,
Jinlü / Jinsi Wanlü surfaces and contemporary yaobian experimentation.
Huang Wenhua’s later work, however, has developed a broader Heyuan identity
involving custom vessel forms, relief decoration, wood firing, private commissions
and collaboration with Huang Yue.
Wood Firing & Electric Firing
Huang Wenhua is unusually useful for collectors because there is strong photographic
and journalistic documentation of more than one firing method.
In March 2021, Xinhua photographed Huang preparing wood fuel and operating
a traditional wood kiln. The same photographic series also showed him using
an electric kiln.
In June 2025, Jianyang News again documented an active wood firing.
Huang explained that as the firing reached approximately 1260°C,
wood feeding became extremely rapid. The report specifically described
this firing as genuine wood firing and documented the process from ignition onward.
The existence of a documented wood kiln does not mean every Huang Wenhua
vessel is wood-fired. Xinhua has documented him using both wood and electric
kilns. The firing method of an individual piece should therefore be established
through its certificate, purchase provenance, original studio description or
direct confirmation from Heyuan.
Materials & Making
Jianyang News reports that Huang Wenhua emphasizes the use of local mineral clay
and mineral glaze. He has also discussed the importance of material selection
and screening finished pieces intended as functional tea ware.
His workshop publicly demonstrates major stages of production including
forming, trimming, glazing and firing. Huang has used livestreaming not simply
to display finished bowls, but to show substantial portions of the making and
kiln process.
Huang Yue · 黄玥 · Grace
Huang Yue is an artist, studio principal and tea-culture practitioner whose
role is central to the identity of Heyuan. Current studio materials list her
independently from Huang Wenhua rather than simply identifying her through
their marriage.
Heyuan describes Huang Yue as
手刻书法建盏首创者, approximately
“originator of hand-carved calligraphy Jian Zhan.”
Because this distinction comes from Heyuan’s own biography, FSOC records it
as the studio’s description rather than treating it as an independently
adjudicated historical title.
Published reporting documents Huang Yue using a carving knife to inscribe
Song poetry directly onto Jian Zhan surfaces. In a 2023 feature, visitors
were shown Huang Wenhua demonstrating forming, trimming, glazing and firing
while Huang Yue demonstrated calligraphy carving.
Her work also extends into tea culture. Heyuan identifies her as a
Song-style diancha practitioner and senior tea artist. Bibliographic records
list Huang Yue as author of
《点茶的传承发展研究》,
approximately Research on the Inheritance and Development of Diancha,
published in Ceramics in 2023.

August 2026. Individual authorship has not yet been assigned by FSOC.
Calligraphy, Poetry & Jian Zhan
Huang Yue’s hand-carved writing gives Heyuan an identity that is not dependent
entirely on glaze pattern. The written surface becomes part of the vessel itself.
Reporting from 2022 documented her carving a line of Song poetry directly
onto a Jian Zhan using a knife. The studio’s broader concept connects two
cultural forms strongly associated with the Song period: Jian ware and poetry.
A later feature stated that the couple continued working with traditional
Jian Zhan mineral clay and glaze while developing these combinations rather
than simply substituting materials that would make decorative techniques easier.
Huang Yue & the Early Heyuan Story
Huang Yue’s connection to Heyuan predates many of the current biographies.
A November 2018 article described her as a 1990s-generation entrepreneur
who founded Heyuan Jian Zhan Culture Company.
The same report documented her collaboration with Wu Zhoufu. It described
Huang Yue regularly visiting Wu’s workshop, learning about Jian Zhan firing
and discussing new designs with him. Their collaboration produced a jointly
marketed work called 和合·如故.
This earlier record is important because it demonstrates that Huang Yue was
involved in Heyuan’s product development and artistic direction years before
the later experience-hall profiles.
How Their Work Overlaps
Documented forming, trimming, glazing, firing, material selection,
kiln work and vessel production.
Documented hand-carved calligraphy, cultural design, Song poetry,
diancha and tea-culture work.
Some Heyuan pieces may therefore be primarily Huang Wenhua works,
some may incorporate Huang Yue’s carving, and some may represent collaborative
studio work. FSOC does not assign individual authorship to a specific object
unless its provenance or the artists themselves establish that attribution.
Recent Work Supplied by the Artists
These photographs were supplied directly to Fifty Shades of Clay by
Huang Yue (Grace) in August 2026. They provide useful evidence of the
studio’s current interest in sculptural and relief-decorated surfaces.
Until individual authorship is confirmed, FSOC identifies them as
recent Heyuan studio work rather than assigning each piece specifically
to Huang Wenhua or Huang Yue.

Heyuan Shanyin · 和远山隐
Heyuan Shanyin is based in Yandun Village in Jianyang, within the wider
cultural landscape of the historic Jian kiln tradition.
The official studio explains the name 和远 through ideas
of inclusiveness and looking toward a wider horizon. Heyuan describes its
aim as building a platform rooted in Jian Zhan culture while also absorbing
other forms of art and everyday-life aesthetics.
Current studio categories include wood-fired work, calligraphy series,
private commissions and larger display pieces.
Huang Wenhua Marks & Collector Reference
FSOC has multiple independently photographed Huang Wenhua pieces showing
his normal underside maker mark. Comparing several documented examples
is much more useful than relying on a single stamp photograph.
One documented piece was specially commissioned for an FSOC collector.
The cup itself was a custom order, but Huang Wenhua used his normal
maker mark. It should not be interpreted as a special custom stamp.
The piece was custom; the mark was not.
These photographs are identified through known provenance as examples
of Huang Wenhua’s normal maker mark. The characters are highly stylized,
so FSOC is not assigning a definitive written transcription solely from
visual interpretation. The exact reading will be added when confirmed
directly with the studio.
Huang Yue & Collaborative Inscriptions
Pieces incorporating Huang Yue’s hand-carved calligraphy may contain
substantial writing beyond the maker’s mark. A carved poem, phrase or
decorative inscription should not automatically be interpreted as a
signature or authentication seal.
As additional examples are confirmed directly with Huang Yue and Huang Wenhua,
FSOC can document the difference between maker marks, studio marks,
calligraphic decoration and collaborative inscriptions.
A correct-looking mark is supporting evidence, not proof of authenticity.
Collectors should also examine workmanship, foot construction, glaze,
certificate, box or packaging, seller provenance and comparison with
documented pieces. Direct confirmation from the studio is especially
valuable when available.
Recognition & Public Documentation
Huang Wenhua’s career is unusually well documented in regional and national
reporting. Xinhua photographed his workshop and kiln activity in 2021.
Fujian Daily records his work 《野·秋》 as receiving an
Outstanding Award in the 2021 Zhengyan Cup competition.
Current Heyuan and published biographical material list him as a Nanping
folk-art honoree and a Fujian light-industry technical expert.
By 2025, Jianyang News explicitly identified him as a Jianyang District
representative inheritor of the Jian kiln / Jian Zhan firing technique.
A 2025 Fujian provincial-government feature also included Huang among the
younger generation of Jianyang craftspeople using contemporary media to
bring Jian Zhan culture to a wider audience.
Why Heyuan Is Interesting to Collectors
Heyuan offers a useful example of contemporary Jian Zhan culture extending
beyond glaze classification alone.
Huang Wenhua contributes documented kiln practice, forming, glaze work,
material research and experimental vessel design. Huang Yue brings
calligraphy, poetry, tea culture and a long record of involvement in the
development of the Heyuan brand.
Their recent work also shows an interest in substantial relief carving
and sculptural surface decoration. This makes Heyuan particularly interesting
for collectors who follow not only hare’s-fur or oil-drop patterns, but the
broader direction of contemporary Jianyang ceramic design.

Documentation Note:
Collector photographs used for the maker-mark reference are from documented
FSOC collection records. Photographs dated August 2026 were supplied directly
to Fifty Shades of Clay by Huang Yue (Grace). Where the precise authorship of
an individual studio object has not yet been confirmed, FSOC intentionally
avoids assigning it to either artist.
