Biography

Chen Chunhua (陈春华) is a contemporary Jian Zhan artist from Houjing Village in Shuiji, Jianyang, one of the historic centers of Jian kiln production. He grew up close to the Jian kiln landscape and later returned to ceramic work after military service, developing a practice focused on the darker, more restrained glaze vocabulary associated with traditional Jian ware.

Chen studied Jian Zhan firing under Pei Chunyuan (裴春元) and Wu Lizhu (吴立主). In 2016 he established Huayu Jianzhan Ceramics Co., Ltd. (华御建盏陶瓷有限公司), where his work has continued to center on Jian ware materials, glaze development and firing research.

Huayu Jianzhan · 华御建盏

Huayu Jianzhan is closely identified with Chen Chunhua’s work. The company operates in the Jianyang ceramic region and is associated with the Huayu Dragon Kiln in Houjing Village. In 2019, China’s National Intellectual Property Administration included Huayu Jianzhan Ceramics among the enterprises authorized to use the protected geographical-indication special mark for Jian Zhan.

Documented work from Huayu commonly carries the 华御 mark, making the studio name an important identification clue alongside the artist name, certificate and complete vessel.

Materials & Firing

Chen’s practice emphasizes traditional Jian ware materials. Published profiles describe his glaze preparation as using natural mineral materials together with plant ash, applied over an iron-rich Jian body. His forms remain functional and comparatively restrained so that the fired glaze becomes the main visual element.

Rather than treating the surface as painted decoration, Chen relies on glaze chemistry, kiln atmosphere, temperature and cooling to develop the markings. The result is work with deep black grounds, metallic silver crystallization and strong contrast between the dark body and the fired pattern.

Silver Hare’s Fur & Black-Ground Silver Spot

Traditional silver hare’s fur (银毫) is one of the glaze styles most strongly associated with Chen Chunhua. His silver-hare’s-fur work favors clear, elongated streaks over a dark base, producing a quieter and more classical appearance than many highly iridescent contemporary Jian Zhan surfaces.

He is also known for black-ground silver-spot work, where rounded silver markings develop across a dense black glaze. Published examples show spots of varying size and spacing, sometimes spreading toward the rim in larger clustered formations.

Other Documented Glazes

Chen’s documented range also includes oil spot (油滴), Yaobian oil spot (曜变油滴) and traditional partridge spot (鹧鸪斑). Across these glaze families, his work generally stays close to a traditional Jian ware palette, with black, silver and dark metallic tones carrying more weight than bright decorative color.

Recognition

Chen Chunhua has been recognized as a representative inheritor of the Jian kiln/Jian Zhan firing tradition. Earlier public inheritor rosters place him within Jianyang’s local heritage system, and his professional biography also records recognition within Nanping’s skilled-crafts community.

In 2015, his Oil-Drop Flared-Rim Tea Bowl (油滴撇口茶盏) received a gold award in the arts-and-crafts “Huabiao Award” competition held during the China (Beijing) International Cultural and Creative Products Fair.

Teaching & Lineage

Chen Chunhua’s place in contemporary Jian ware also extends through artists who identify him as a teacher. Lin Jianfeng 林建锋 and Zhi Jing 支静 both identify Chen Chunhua as part of their training lineage.

Attribution is strongest when the maker or studio mark is considered together with the certificate, original packaging and complete vessel. Glaze appearance alone should not be used to identify an individual Jian Zhan maker.
