Studio
Muchun Wood-Fired Ceramics (木春柴烧) is a ceramic studio rooted in Dehua, Fujian. The studio is a collaboration between an artist and ceramicist couple, bringing sculptural design together with professional ceramic production and wood firing.
Practice
The studio works across wood-fired vessels, ceramic sculpture, incense burners and other functional or sculptural forms. Faceted walls, compressed surfaces, carved areas and irregular planes are used to expose the structure of the clay and to make each vessel read differently from multiple angles.
Tianzhu Series 天珠系列
The Tianzhu Series (天珠系列) is one of Muchun’s most recognizable bodies of work. Layers of contrasting ceramic material create rings, eyes, waves and banded formations that run through the body of the vessel. Cutting, carving and twisting the clay reveals different portions of those internal patterns.
Su Guobi 苏国笔
Su Guobi (苏国笔), born in 1986 and associated with Dehua, is a ceramic artist connected with Muchun. He began studying arts and crafts in Fujian in 2002 and developed a practice involving ceramic sculpture, clay modeling, kiln firing and wood-firing techniques.
His named bodies of work include 原生态柴烧陶瓷雕塑, 无相香炉 and the 天珠系列.
