Biography
Lai Jianqiang (赖建强) is a contemporary ceramic artist associated with the Da Nankeng kiln (大南坑窑) tradition in Jiangle County, Fujian. His work belongs to a living regional ceramic culture whose wood-fired kiln practice has continued into the present day.
Da Nankeng ceramics are distinct from Jian Zhan. Dark glazes or crystalline surfaces can create a superficial resemblance, but the two traditions differ in kiln lineage, production history and material context.
Da Nankeng Kiln Tradition
The Da Nankeng tradition is formally recognized in Fujian as 将乐大南坑陶瓷烧制技艺. Official heritage records identify Chen Zhenyun (陈振云) as its provincial representative inheritor. The Chenji wood kiln associated with the tradition traces its working history to the Qing period and continues to use labor-intensive wood firing.
Da Nankeng production follows a highly segmented traditional process of 81 procedures. A typical wood firing lasts around 26–27 hours, with cooling continuing after the firing before the kiln can be opened.
Firing & Surface
Da Nankeng’s segmented dragon kiln allows different chambers to be managed at different temperatures and atmospheres. Flame, ash and kiln atmosphere can leave visible variation on the finished ceramic, giving wood-fired work an organic surface that is difficult to reproduce exactly.
Lai Jianqiang’s work uses this broader language of hand-finished forms, dark or iron-rich tones and variable kiln surfaces. Attribution should rest on provenance and maker documentation rather than assuming that a Jian-like glaze automatically makes a piece Jian Zhan.
Marks & Identification
Pieces attributed to Lai Jianqiang may carry freeform or abstract base marks rather than a clearly legible square name seal. The mark should therefore be considered together with documentation and the Da Nankeng kiln context.
