Ding Jiaxiang
丁家相Artistic Jian Zhan · painterly glaze work · Jianyang
Biography
Ding Jiaxiang (丁家相), born in 1976 in Jianyang, developed first as a painter before turning increasingly toward ceramics. He worked as a free painter and traveled widely in China, and that visual-art background remains central to his Jian Zhan: instead of relying only on naturally formed kiln patterns, he uses glaze as a painting medium to build deliberate scenes and compositions inside the vessel.
He is a National First-Class Senior Technician (国家一级高级技师), a Nanping arts-and-crafts master, a representative inheritor of Chayang kiln ceramic-making techniques (茶洋窑制作技艺), and a fourth-generation inheritor of the Chayang kiln tradition. His practice is closely identified with 艺术建盏, or “artistic Jian Zhan.”
Artistic Jian Zhan
Ding’s approach grew from the idea of painting with glaze. Landscapes, figures, leaves, night skies and historical imagery are composed intentionally before firing, but the kiln still participates in the final image. The result sits between painterly composition and the unpredictable mineral behavior of Jian ware.
His works include 墨韵山水, 黄金木叶, 大叶有成, 人纹木叶, 寒香, 夜曲, 丝绸之路 and 忆江南, alongside more conventional oil-drop work. The recurring visual language includes mountains, human figures, leaf forms, moonlight, desert imagery and strongly structured blue oil-drop surfaces.
