周家勇 Zhou Jiayong
National-Level Ceramic Artist · Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritor
Zhou Jiayong (周家勇), born in 1974 in Jianyang, Fujian Province, is a nationally recognized senior ceramic artist and a designated inheritor of China’s intangible cultural heritage in Jian ware. He was raised in a family with deep roots in the traditions of Jian Zhan, in the very region known as the birthplace of this ancient craft.
From an early age, Zhou was fascinated by the ever-changing effects of fire, glaze, and atmosphere in the kiln. Over the years, he has mastered the fundamentals of traditional Jian Zhan production while also developing a number of signature glaze styles. His work honors the spirit of Song dynasty tea culture while embracing creative innovation.
Through decades of careful study and experimentation, Zhou has expanded the expressive range of Jian ware and has introduced multiple series reflecting both tradition and artistry. His techniques have been recognized across China, and his works are valued by collectors, museums, and cultural institutions.
In July 2019, Zhou Jiayong’s traditional Jian ware was selected as the only officially designated Jian Zhan product for sale in the Palace Museum (故宫). This honor speaks to the exceptional craftsmanship, cultural fidelity, and aesthetic refinement of his work.
