About the Artist: Yu Qijun (余奇骏)
Yu Qijun is a rising star among young Jian ware artisans, founder of the “Impression Chameleon Jian Zhan Studio” (印象曜变建盏工作室). Influenced by his father, a dedicated craftsman, Yu began his journey into black-glazed Jian ware in his early twenties. He is part of one of the earlier domestic generations to specialize in modern-day Jian Zhan.
Drawing from deep ceramic expertise, he has studied traditional techniques and innovated through exploration of famous kiln towns such as Dehua, Jingdezhen, and Longquan. Yu is particularly known for incorporating the visual intensity of the Sichuan-based “Zhending Glaze” into his Jian ware—resulting in breathtaking transformations that echo both Song dynasty elegance and modern aesthetics. His work balances tradition, innovation, and the soulful beauty of the tea ceremony.
Philosophy
“A potter, in a humble town…
Hands meet earth in silent understanding,
People meet clay, clay meets warmth,
And in that warmth, they become one.”
This poetic philosophy—“传承·优化·创造” (Inheritance · Refinement · Creation)—guides all of Yu Qijun’s work. His aim is not only to preserve the thousand-year legacy of Jian ware but to optimize and reimagine it for modern appreciation.
A Legacy of Beauty
The refined style of the Song dynasty has endured for over a thousand years. Jian ware, once favored by scholars and emperors alike, continues to inspire with its quiet strength and deep cultural resonance. Yu Qijun’s studio seeks to honor this timeless legacy with every piece fired.
