About the Artist: Tong Mi Xiong (童密雄)
Tong Mi Xiong is a third-generation ceramic artist deeply rooted in the traditions of Jian ware, known for his meticulous craftsmanship and innovative approach to tea ware design. Recognized as a Master of Arts and Crafts and a Certified Vocational Technician in China’s light industry sector, Tong has devoted his life to preserving and evolving the aesthetic legacy of Chinese black-glazed ceramics.
He holds prestigious titles including:
– Member of the Fujian Ceramic Association
– Council Member of the Jianyang Jian Zhan Association
– National Ritual Arts Artist of China
A passionate advocate for cultural heritage, Tong has received numerous accolades throughout his career. His works have earned gold and silver medals at leading exhibitions such as the China Jingdezhen International Ceramic Fair and the National Arts & Crafts Expo. In 2018, he published a widely cited paper on the influence of traditional tea ware design on modern forms, which won a national first-class award.
Among his standout pieces are “Shadowed Lid”, which earned a design patent in 2021, and “Heavenly Pearl” (2024), now part of the permanent collection at the Datang City Museum in Xi’an. His works such as “Colorful Eyes,” “Jade Sand,” and “Mountains and Elegance” have also been featured in provincial exhibitions and museum collections.
Tong’s style merges time-honored kiln techniques with refined modern aesthetics. He is particularly known for his “Black Dragon Scale” (黑曜龙鳞) glaze patterns, capturing dynamic movement and lustrous depth—a visual dance between light and shadow.
