About Jian盖
Jian盖 (Jian Gai) refers to a traditional lidded teacup made from Jian ware, a celebrated ceramic craft originating in the Song Dynasty. Once reserved for the emperor and upper elites for drinking top-grade teas such as whisked tea, Jian盖 is considered the ideal vessel for tea appreciation. Although the techniques declined during the Yuan and were lost for over 800 years, today’s artisans in Jianyang have revived this historic craft.
Jian盖 is renowned for its deep black glaze and minimalist silhouette. Each piece is shaped by hand using traditional methods — a process that includes over 42 steps, culminating in a high-temperature reduction firing. Due to the volatile nature of kiln transformations, the success rate is low, making each successful piece both rare and precious.
The surface of the glaze develops unique crystallizations, resulting in textures and patterns that appear to shimmer and change under light. The tactile sensation, depth of glaze, and subtle luster — often with metallic qualities — give each piece a refined, ancient character.
Crafting Process
This Jian盖 was crafted over 13 days, involving 312 hours of work. The artist completed 13 major steps and handled over 230 detailed processes to achieve the final form. Every piece requires extraordinary patience and craftsmanship — a true labor of dedication.
“A flawless Jian盖 is worth waiting for.”
