Liu Jun

About the Artist: Liu Jun (刘军)

Liu Jun is a Jianzhan ceramic artist from Shuiji Town, Jianyang—an area known as the historic heart of black porcelain in China. Steeped in centuries of tradition, Liu Jun continues the legacy of Jian ware using time-honored methods that date back over 800 years to the Song Dynasty.

His craftsmanship emphasizes the full traditional firing process, which involves more than 40 meticulous steps—from clay refinement and shaping to the final kiln transformation. Working with native iron-rich clays and natural mineral glazes, Liu Jun’s work reflects the harmony between technique, nature, and fire.

Liu Jun’s pieces are admired for their simplicity, elegance, and vivid crystallization patterns that emerge during firing. While not formally affiliated with large studios or galleries, his works are widely circulated in local circles—and are often found at the street markets in Jianyang, where independent artisans bring their finest creations directly to the public.
