About the Artist
Huang Yuxi (黄雨茜)
Title: Female Artisan (女匠)
Huang Yuxi is a rising star in the world of Jian Zhan, representing a new generation of artists carrying forward this ancient craft. She studied under national intangible cultural heritage inheritor Cai Long and developed a deep appreciation for ceramic arts from an early age. Initially drawn to collecting and researching Jian ware, she eventually devoted herself fully to the art of kiln-firing and glaze creation.
Her signature style centers on mastering and enhancing the you di (oil-spot) glaze. Her pieces are celebrated for their rich coloration, delicate layering, and smooth, lustrous surfaces. These qualities have earned her numerous awards and the admiration of collectors.
Blending tradition with modern aesthetics, Huang’s glaze designs evoke both classic elegance and personal flair. Her works are known for their refined forms and vivid visual energy. She upholds the philosophy of “a thousand cups, a thousand faces,” embracing the uniqueness brought by natural variation in every firing.
A graduate of Quanzhou Normal University’s Department of Art, Huang is a member of the Arts & Crafts Committee of the Fujian Ceramic Industry Association. In 2022, she was named an Outstanding Individual of the Year in Jianyang District, and her works have been acquired by the Jianyang District Museum—marking her as a noteworthy emerging force in contemporary Jian Zhan.
Artistic Vision
For Huang Yuxi, fire is not just a tool but a co-creator. She treats high-temperature firing as an art in itself, letting glaze flow and transform naturally into cloudlike patterns and starry speckles. Her unique ability to control multi-layered glaze effects creates a dreamlike texture—glowing with light, life, and spontaneity.
She often says, “Craft is not only a means of living—it’s a sentiment, a belief, a responsibility.” This deep respect for her art is evident in every step: from wheel-throwing to glazing to the final moment a cup emerges from the kiln.
“One person. One lifetime. One craft.”
