Chen Hong · Lacquer Artist
陳紅 is a contemporary lacquer artist born into a traditional lacquerware family in Jian’ou, Fujian Province. She studied under Master Chen Tiancan — a senior figure in the Fuzhou bodiless lacquer tradition — and has since developed her own distinctive style blending heritage with modern refinement.
Her work focuses on 脱胎漆器 (Fuzhou-style bodiless lacquerware), a nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage, with a particular emphasis on detailed decoration, bold color work, and fluid, swirling patterns. Each piece is crafted through more than 70 intricate steps, preserving the integrity of this centuries-old craft while exploring new artistic directions.
Recognition & Exhibitions
- 2022 – Her lacquered “Mountain and Water Zen Cup” was selected for the Argentina Ceramic Art Exhibition.
- 2023 – Her large piece “Water-Drop Washbasin” was chosen for permanent collection by the Nanping City Museum.
- She currently serves as a council member of the Nanping City Arts and Crafts Association.
Style & Technique
Chen Hong’s work is instantly recognizable for its rich, psychedelic color gradients and patterning — often resembling peacock feathers, rippling water, or molten gemstone. The lacquered surfaces exhibit an almost otherworldly depth and sheen, achieved through patient layering and polishing.
Legacy & Mission
As both artist and cultural steward, Chen Hong is committed to the revitalization of traditional lacquer arts. Through exhibitions, workshops, and contemporary interpretations of classic forms, she invites new audiences to engage with the elegance and complexity of Fuzhou lacquerware.
